The ear responsible for hearing and balance, also produces ear wax.
This natural orangey-brown substance is not the most welcomed gift from your body.
Dr. Craig Kasper, founder of New York Hearing Doctors, advises against using cotton swabs like Q-Tips for ear cleaning. These swabs are meant for purposes other than ear cleaning, and inserting them into the ear canal can lead to injury.
When Q-Tips are inserted into the ear, they can push wax deeper into the ear canal rather than remove it. This can result in wax blockages and potential harm, such as puncturing the eardrum.
It is safe to use cotton swabs on the outer ear, but for inner ear cleaning, Dr. Kasper recommends gentler methods. The ear canal naturally moves wax towards the outer ear, so using water during a shower can help flush out excess wax.
Individuals with excessive ear wax or hairy ear canals should seek professional help instead of attempting to remove the wax themselves. Professionals can safely clean the ears without causing harm.
For stubborn wax, a few drops of hydrogen peroxide can be used to soften it before flushing it out. However, it is crucial not to over-clean the ears to avoid complications.
In addition to ear cleaning, Dr. Kasper discusses headphone volume and other tips for maintaining healthy hearing on his podcast. Be cautious with ear care products and avoid inserting objects like bobby pins into the ears.
