At just 11 kilometers long, Lord Howe Island is best explored on foot, allowing us to truly immerse ourselves in its stunning landscapes. For a relaxed day, we can embark on the 1.5-hour walk to Little Island, passing picturesque Salmon Beach and lush subtropical rainforest. If we're up for a challenge, the Mount Gower hike is a must.
It's one of the world's best day treks, offering breathtaking views and encounters with rare wildlife, such as the endemic Lord Howe woodhen. This 8-hour climb, accessible only with a guide, includes rope-assisted climbing, making it a thrilling yet rewarding adventure for those not afraid of heights.
Lord Howe Island is home to the world's southernmost coral reef, and we simply must explore it! For a laid-back experience, we can take a glass-bottom boat tour to view the vibrant marine life without getting wet. However, those eager for a more immersive experience can head to Ned's Beach for snorkeling. Here, we may catch sight of clownfish, wrasse, or even a small Galapagos shark.
Diving enthusiasts will be pleased to know that the island offers over 50 dive sites, from shallow dives to more adventurous excursions, with clear waters and exceptional underwater geography.
No matter what outdoor activity we're into, Lord Howe Island has something for everyone. For fishing enthusiasts, the island's waters are teeming with kingfish, yellowfin tuna, and wahoo. Charter boats are available for short or full-day trips, and it's rare to leave without a big catch!
Kayaking is another fantastic way to experience the island's beauty, allowing us to glide over the glassy waters and discover new spots like Rabbit Island. If we're a golfer, we can enjoy the lush nine-hole course, one of the most exciting in Australia, located amidst the beautiful Kentia Palm Forest.
With over 15 beaches around the island, we're sure to find a peaceful spot to unwind. The Lagoon, a stunning beach close to the island's main activities, is perfect for sunset views with minimal crowds.
If we prefer something even quieter, Old Settlement Beach offers a tranquil environment for swimming with turtles and exploring the sea grass beds. Don't forget to pack a picnic – the beachside BBQ is a great spot to enjoy a delicious meal while soaking in the peaceful surroundings.
